What will new Science Standards do for Students?

Looking at the NYSSLS for grades preK – 5, we see wonderful opportunities for integrated lessons that involve problem solving, meaning making and hands-on experiences. The Three Dimensional architecture of the standards is perhaps the most promising aspect of the NYSSLS in terms of improvements in elementary science instruction.  However, the biggest question (and most ironic point of all) is whether elementary teachers will be able to have the time to incorporate this change in teaching style and content. Will there be assessments that hold districts accountable to provide enough time to teach elementary science? Will guidance be provided to the field that emphasizes the importance of science instruction and professional development? If those things happen, then I think the future of science in our schools will be brighter for all students – because they all begin as elementary kids.
